Learn, engage & act to support the planet! Walnut Creek Earth Month 2024 brings together organizations that advocate for environmental, community, and personal health with a week of engaging events.
When: April 2024: Free live and online events to raise awareness and promote local organizations and businesses that support the environment and create healthier communities.
- Weekly Workshops – April 2024: Enhance your eco-knowledge with specialized sessions. From pollinator protection to waste reduction, each workshop is designed to empower you with actionable sustainability skills.
- Celebration Day – April 20th, 2024: A day packed with excitement from 11 AM to 4 PM. Revel in the joy of eco-conscious living with live music, games, and engaging demonstrations for all ages.

- Composting with Worms, April 4, 4-6pm (Sponsored by RecycleSmart)
Location: Heather Farm Park, Club House (301 N San Carlos Drive/ Walnut Creek, CA 94598)
This lecture-style workshop covers the basics of backyard composting (hot/cold composting), Vermicomposting, mulching and grasscycling, with time for Q&A and troubleshooting. Marian Woodard, compost expert, worm wrangler, teacher, and Master Gardener will be your instructor. Marian also manages the beautiful Rodgers Ranch Heritage Center in Pleasant Hill.
Children are encouraged to attend. This workshop is a great introduction to home composting for families, young children, and everyone who wants to reuse natural organic material, decrease landfill use, and fertilize the soil beneath us.

As currently planned, our panel will include Michael Kent, Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials Ombudsman and staff for the Hazardous Materials Commission; Heidi Taylor from Healthy Martinez; Marisol Cantu, Richmond Progressive Alliance, AB 617 Community Steering Committee Co-lead; and a representative from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Audience questions will be collected and answered through the Zoom chat. The Library will provide closed captioning for this event, and the Library and LWVDV are underwriting simultaneous Spanish translation. Event History
A small idea for a Walnut Creek eco-art contest has blossomed into a full month of learning about, creating, and having fun with sustainability. In 2019, Robert Joe, the founder of Sustainable Walnut Creek, organized a youth eco-art contest to raise awareness of sustainable living practices. This was the only event of its kind in the Bay Area.
This event has evolved into a community-wide undertaking for the public in and around Walnut Creek. It has grown over the years and expanded to an entire month of activities called Walnut Creek Earth Month. It starts the first week of April and ends on Earth Day with a celebration event.
The goal is to bring the community, local organizations, and small businesses together to promote sustainable lifestyles and stress the importance of advocating for an environmentally-friendly and healthy city. Jackie Garcia Mann, a co-organizer with 350 Contra Costa, says, “Events all week will welcome the community to learn, engage, and take action for the planet.”
“We hope sustainability will be integrated into every part of our local communities. The expert workshops series are meant to provide a perspective on where your local engagement will make a difference,” says co-organizer and Climate Reality Leader Nadine Hammer. “Every day has a different theme, such as reducing plastic waste, home building electrification, or youth climate activism.”
Bob Joe is thrilled with the growth of his simple idea. “This is a team effort, and I appreciate the energy and passion of all the people and organizations involved. Clearly there is a strong interest in how sustainability can make our world a better place.
